Musicals You Should Listen To
It's a revennnnnge party
A party that ends with somebody's head on a spike
Woah woah
It's a reveeeeeenge party with your two best friends
It's like a party with revenge is what it's like
Oh, wait a second, I was supposed to make a post that actually made sense instead of just singing random song lyrics?
Let's start over then, okay?
*clears throat*
Hi, my name is McKayla, and I am obsessed with musicals. I mean it. I even had a dream that was a musical once. Of course, I have plenty of things I'm obsessed with, but let's keep it at musicals for now.
So, I thought that I'd make a post about my favorite musicals, why you should listen to them, and my favorite songs from said musical. This isn't really in any specific order. You can find all of these on YouTube or Spotify. Anyway, let's get started.
Beetlejuice: The Musical
Beetlejuice is a delightfully strange musical. It has its own distinct style, and it's a very fun musical. If you like the movie, then I'd suggest you start here. It's October now, anyway, so it'd be a perfect time to listen to it. The songs are incredibly catchy, it's hilarious, and it's just so iconic. I would highly recommend this one.
The GIFs are great, too.
Favorite Songs: Fright of Their Lives, Say My Name, Dead Mom, Ready Set Not Yet, Home, The Whole Being Dead Thing, Invisible, No Reason, Girl Scout, Creepy Old Guy, That Beautiful Sound
Mean Girls: The Musical
Mean Girls was the first musical I ever listened to, and it is so fetch. The songs are amazing, the cast is amazing, and, ahhhhhh, just listen to it. I love almost every single one of these songs, and, if I had to pick a favorite musical, it would be this one. Seeing it live would be perfect, but, until then, I'll just continue to listen to the soundtrack, randomly burst into songs, and make constant references to it. If you've seen the movie, then this would be a good place to start, but, if you haven't, it's awesome just as a musical.
There's Barrett being the perfect Janis. Gahhhhh, I love her so freakin' much.
Favorite Songs: Revenge Party, Meet the Plastics, Someone Gets Hurt, World Burn, What's Wrong With Me?, Sexy, Whose House is This?, Do This Thing, Apex Predator, Stop, Where Do You Belong?, It Roars, Stupid with Love, I'd Rather Be Me, A Cautionary Tale, Fearless
Hairspray
I saw the movie last spring and, while I liked it, I really love the music. The music is really good, everybody's really talented, and I love the '60s styles. I mostly listen to the movie version, but the Broadway version is really great, too. This is a pretty famous musical, so you've most likely heard of it. It doesn't seem like my type of musical, but I really like it.
Favorite Songs: The Nicest Kids in Town, You Can't Stop the Beat, Good Morning Baltimore, The New Girl in Town, The Legend of Miss Baltimore, Ladies' Choice, Without Love
Newsies
I don't know a whole lot about Newsies, since I just started listening to it, but there's a movie and a musical. I think the movie came first, but I'm not sure. It was based on the true story of the Newsboys strike of 1899. It's really good, and so inspiring, and it's definitely one of my favorites. It never fails to make me want to change the world, which is good.
Favorite Songs: Watch What Happens, Carrying the Banner, Seize the Day, Overture, The World Will Know, The Bottom Line, That's Rich, King of New York, Santa Fe
Six
Six is a musical based on Henry the Eighth's six wives. It has a lot of really good, incredibly catchy songs, and it was a cool idea. Plus, there's some history in there, which is great. According to my mom, some of the songs are kind of weird, but it's definitely worth listening to.
Favorite Songs: Ex-Wives, Don't Lose Your Head, All You Wanna Do, I Don't Need Your Love, No Way, Heart of Stone, Get Down, Six
Heathers: The Musical
Well, dang-dang-diggity-dang-a-dang, what to say about Heathers? Remember when I said that Mean Girls is my favorite musical? I think Heathers is my second favorite. It has everything: witty lyrics, Jessica Keenan Wynn, Elle McLemore, '80s fashion, murder, Barrett Wilbert Weed, and a whole song about slushies. It's probably the most explicit musical on this list, and it's definitely not everyone's cup of cocoa, but it's so worth listening to.
Favorite Songs: Beautiful, Big Fun, Candy Store, Dead Girl Walking, Dead Girl Walking [Reprise], Fight For Me, The Me Inside of Me, Our Love Is God, Yo Girl, I Am Damaged, Seventeen, Seventeen [Reprise]
Okay, so I haven't heard all that many songs from this musical, because Spotify is being uncooperative, but I love the ones I've heard. It's very sad, and emotional, so make sure you have a box of tissues [unless you're like me, and you rarely cry]. Anyway, there's not much else to say other than that it's freaking fantastic.
Favorite Songs: Words Fail, Anybody Have a Map?, Waving Through a Window, Requiem, Sincerely Me, Good For You
Freaky Friday: The Musical
I'm just going to assume that everyone here knows the plot. The songs are super catchy, and it's a very sweet and cute musical without being cheesy......does that make sense? Anyway, it's a lesser-known musical, but it's a great one.
Favorite Songs: Oh Biology, Prologue, No More Fear, Just One Day, I Got This, Busted, Watch Your Back
Hamilton
Yes, I'm aware that pretty much everyone talks about this musical, which is why I didn't listen to it, initially. But then Nicole made a whole post about why you should listen to it, so I decided to listen to it, and I actually liked some of the songs. It's not my favorite, but it's good. This is another historical musical, so if you're into history, I'd look into it.
Favorite Songs: Guns and Ships, Burn, The Schuyler Sisters, Alexander Hamilton, Aaron Burr Sir, Satisfied, My Shot, Take A Break, The Room Where It Happened
Falsettos [2016 revival]
This is another one I listened to because a blogger recommended it, so I looked it up and started listening to it. It's another one where I don't know much about the story, and I haven't heard very many of the songs, but I know that I like it.
Favorite Songs: A Marriage Proposal/A Tight-Knit Family, Something Bad is Happening, Please Come to Our House, Jason's Bar Mitzvah, Falsettoland
Waitress
Ahhhh, this musical is so amazing. Again, it's sweet, without being cheesy. It centers around Jenna, a waitress who's good at baking. There's obviously other stuff that happens in the story, but I don't want to spoil too much. The baking part makes me hungry, there are so many sweet characters, and so many people speak with a strong Southern accent [which sounds awesome when singing]. Anyway, I really love this one, too.
Favorite Songs: When He Sees Me, Opening Up, Opening Up [Reprise], What's Inside, The Negative, What Baking Can Do, Club Knocked Up
So, yes, this is a lot of musicals, and, obviously, you don't have to listen to all of them [or any of them]. These are just my personal favorites. I think if I were to rank them it would go something like this:
1: Mean Girls
2: Heathers
3: Beetlejuice
4: Waitress
5: Dear Evan Hansen
6: Hairspray
7: Six
8: Newsies
9: Hamilton
10: Freaky Friday
11: Falsettos
They're all amazing, though, and I love them all [maybe a little too much even].
Which of these musicals have you listened to? Which musicals would you recommend to me?
I haven't listened to many of these. I love Newsies! It's one of my favorites. My favorite song is "The World Will Know". I've also heard part of Dear Evan Hansen (my favorite song is "Waving Through a Window"), and Hamilton (my favorite song is "Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story"). There is a really awesome mash-up between the songs "You Will Be Found" and "The Story of Tonight" performed by Ben Platt and Lin Manuel-Miranda. I recommend listening to it once you've heard the original songs!
ReplyDeleteOh, what is Heathers about? I've never heard of it.
Lately I started listening to The Prince of Egypt, and I'd forgotten how much I love that one!
Yay, Newsies is amazing! "The World Will Know" is my favorite, too.
ReplyDeleteIt's so good, isn't it? "Waving Through a Window" is excellent.
Ooh, cool. I'll have to look into that once I finish listening to them both. Thanks for the recommendation.
Ahhh, well, I haven't seen the movie so I don't know how much I could tell you (you should probably ask Skye because she mentioned watching it in one of her posts). From what I can tell from the songs, it's about this guy named J.D who's dating this girl named Veronica, and she's part of a group of popular girls (sort of like the Plastics in Mean Girls) who are all named Heather, and then somehow J.D tricks her into killing the leader, Heather Chandler. That's what I know, so I hope that was helpful. I really like it, but it does have a lot of language, so you should know that before you listen to it, if you're going to.
I'll have to look into that one. I don't think I've ever heard of it.
I've listened to Beatlejuice, Six and Hamilton. And I have heard a few songs from Dear Evan Hansen, but only a few. As for Six it wasn't really my favorite, I guess it was because I didn't know the premise before listening to it and thought it was strange to hear stuff like "LOL" in a song about someone who wouldn't have known about the acronym. Also I was kind of surprised of how boy crazy some of the songs were.
ReplyDeleteAs for Beatlejuice I really like a lot of the songs from it, including "The Whole Being Dead Thing" and "That Beautiful Sound," I like the dark sense of humor of the musical, really.
This was a fun post to read. :)
-Quinley
Cool. Those are all good musicals.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I thought that was kind of weird, too. Maybe they were trying to make it sound a bit more modern.
Oh, yeah. That's true. Especially Anne Boleyn's song, and Katherine Howard's. I guess that was in character? I don't know.
Yes, it's such a great musical. Those songs are great.
Thank you. And thanks for commenting.
Ooh, these all sound really good! I haven't watched a lot of musicals (I think the only one I've seen on this list is Hairspray and that was the movie version lol) but I definitely want to watch more someday!
ReplyDeleteI don't think this counts as a musical (it's a movie), but I really love The Greatest Showman, the music is AMAZING (I listen to the soundtrack on repeat lol) and I love the themes it deals with :)
I hadn't seen a lot either until last month either, lol.
ReplyDeleteOoh, the movie is really good.
Ahhhh, yes, I love that movie. And the songs are so good. Thanks so much for commenting.
