15 Signs You Might Be a Fangirl/Fanboy
Helloooo, people of the Internet. So, I did a post like this before, but I decided I wanted to do it again. Some things are the same, but most are different. Obviously, not everybody is going to relate to everything on this list, but hopefully you'll relate to some. Or this will at least give you a good laugh. Let's get on with the post, before I start rambling.
Also, am I even a real fangirl if I don't acknowledge the birthday of one of my favorite Broadway stars? Happy Birthday, Barrett Wilbert Weed. You're super talented, and I love the characters you play. I already made a post about her. I'm too lazy to put a link, but you can find it if you're interested enough. Alright, now on to the post for reals.
#1: You Compare Everything To Fictional Situations
Whenever there's a problem, you might think, ''Oh, this is just like in *enter whatever show/movie I've been watching or book I've been reading*. Whenever someone gets a pet, you suggest it be named after a fictional character. No matter what the situation is, you have advice. You also relate fictional situations to other fictional situations. For example, sorting every single Glee character into their respective Hogwarts houses.
#2: Your Social Media is 90% Fandoms
If you have an Instagram, you probably post screenshots, and fan art a lot. If you have Twitter, you tweet about characters a lot. If you have a blog, you spend a lot of time reviewing things, comparing things, doing character analyses, or just screaming about them. Sure, you occasionally post about other stuff, but fiction is your thing.
#3: You Know How It Feels to Be Lonely in A Fandom.........
Whether it's because you have an unpopular opinion, because your ship isn't very well-liked, or because your fandom just isn't well-known, you've felt lonely. And fandom lonely is different from regular lonely. It's less sad [still sad, just less so], and more about trying to convince other people to join your side. Or trying to find someone who already is on your side.
#4: ......Which Means You're Super Excited When Someone Shares Your Opinions
Maybe they actually like your OTP. Maybe they share that same unpopular opinion. Heck, maybe they're in your fandom. The feeling of meeting someone in your fandom is crazy-exciting. Maybe they just like your fandom, but aren't super into it yet [emphasis on the word yet]. Either way, it's one of the best feelings there is.
#5: You're Always Finding Ways to Sneakily Bring Fandoms Into the Conversations
If you get bored during a conversation, you might try to sneak in a quote or reference, and see if anyone gets it. Or you may be less subtle, and conversations go like this:
Person: Hi.
Me: Hi.
Me: Random question: do you like musicals? What about the MCU? Warehouse 13?
Because, really, what's better than talking about fandoms?
#6: Your GIF usage is On Point
One thing that I can say is that every single fangirl/fanboy I've ever met has been really great with GIFs. Maybe it's because you have so many fandoms to choose from, or maybe it's because your emotions are so intense that you can only express them in GIF form, or maybe you wanted to use a GIF so badly that you found a way to make it make sense.
#7: You May or May Not Have Spent the Better Part of Your Day Reading/Watching TV
You may or may not have stayed up 'till 3 a.m reading 'one more chapter'. You also may or may not have binge-watched an entire season of a show in one day. Okay, if we're being honest, you probably have, but you're not going to admit it. Not unless you're with other fangirls.
#8: When People Criticize Your Fandoms You Take It Extremely Personally
It doesn't matter what fandom you're in: there will always be people who treat you negatively for it. Maybe they think it's too mainstream or too obscure or maybe they object to fandoms as a whole. Either way, you probably have elaborate revenge plans that you'll never actually go through with, and you think about them whenever the haters start, well, hating.
#9: You Sometimes Simultaneously Ship a Character With Two Different Characters
I call these characters Betty Coopers, because I ship her with Jughead and think they're a cute couple......but her dynamic with Veronica is the best and I still stand by my opinion that they have feelings for each other [I mean, look at that GIF]. You probably have a couple ships like this. It. Is. The. Most. Frustrating. Thing. Ever. It's also the best thing ever. And, hey, that makes it all the more likely that one of your ships will sail, right?
#10: Of Course, You Almost Certainly Have an OTP
Two words: Brittana forever. Okay, you probably want a slightly better explanation, right? OTP stands for One True Pairing, and it is basically the ship that you love with all your heart and will continue to ship until the day you die. When you have an OTP, it is impossible to ship either character with anybody else. You just want the two of them to be happy together. And when/if your OTP is *gasp* canon????? It's a dream come true.#11: You Know Everything About Your Fandoms
I mean, maybe not everything, but you probably know more about the cast of your favorite movie than your average Joe, and you've probably watched/read at least an interview with an author you like. And when it comes to characters? You may or may not have spent countless hours combing through Wikipedia pages trying to find out every detail about them. Just me? Fine.#12: One Word: Fanfiction
So, fanfiction is a truly magical creation. It involves two of my favorite things: writing and the lives of already-created fictional characters. Truthfully, I haven't been writing much fanfiction lately [too busy working on my own novel], but I've written quite a lot in the past, and maybe you have, too. Or maybe you prefer reading other people's fanfics, because there are some seriously talented fanfiction authors out there, guys. Either way, at some point you've probably wondered, ''But what if it didn't happen like this? What if this happened instead?'' And that, my friends, is where the obsession with fanfiction starts. And it never ends.
#13: You Have Way More Fictional Crushes Than Real-Life Ones
SERIOUSLY, THOUGH, WHY IS EVERYONE ON TV SO FREAKIN' BEAUTIFUL???? *clears throat* Er, what I meant to say is, despite the fact that meddling in various character's love lives is fun, and you have wayyyy too much fun shipping them together, but you've probably had a crush on a character. Or two. Or two hundred. It's just so hardddd not to fall in love with some of them because they're so beautiful and talented and perfect in every way and just ahhhhhhh. #14: You've Always Wanted to Go on a Bonafide Adventure
You've probably daydreamed about saving the world, or helping save the world, or just doing something exciting and adventure-y [you know I've been watching way too much Buffy the Vampire Slayer when I start talking like Xander]. I mean, how awesome would it be to be a Warehouse agent? Or a Librarian? Or the Slayer [although they die a lot, so maybe just part of the Scooby Gang]? Or *gasps* attend Hogwarts? If you're a proud superfan you've probably wished that a fictional career was real, and that you could go save the world like all of these characters. #15: You're Probably a Little Weird
I mean, the life of a fangirl [or fanboy, because we don't exclude here] does get a little crazy. You're maybe a bit obsessive, you certainly have a big imagination, and you're just not all that normal. But that's okay, because you have all of your fellow fandom nerd friends, and you can all be weird together. Being a fangirl means different things for different people. Maybe for you it means rewatching Firefly every month, or devouring numerous fanfictions. Maybe it means buying an endless supply of merch, or shipping fiercely. Maybe it means reading every second of your spare time, or maybe it means that you're just plain obsessed with fiction. I really hate ''real fan'' culture, so I'm here to say, if you like something, you're a real fan.
If you actually read through all of this, congratulations! *hands you virtual cake*
So, did you enjoy this very strange, rambly post? Can you relate to any of these 15 signs? Are you in any of my fandoms [if so, TELL ME. I need someone to fangirl with or I'll go insane]? Do you have any recommendations for me [because, obviously, I need even more fandoms]?
Until Next Time
I feel so called out in this post. It was excellent!
ReplyDeleteHaha, I mean most of it certainly applies to me, too. Thank you so much.
ReplyDeleteI relate to almost all of these.💙
ReplyDelete-Quinley
Cool. Which ones didn't you relate to?
ReplyDeleteJust the gif one. I don't use a whole lot of gifs generally (unless I'm on a forum).
DeleteAnd maybe the fan-fiction? I've only written one fanfic. :)
-Quinley
Ahhh, I see. Thanks.
DeleteI relate to too many of these XD
ReplyDeleteI mean....it was all based on stuff I do so........
ReplyDeleteMe. Me. Me. Me again. Yep, here you named everything that I do. Especially trying to work it into every conversation...You definitely displayed your talents and were spot on with the gifs! I am really into nine of the fandoms that you listed.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you related to it! Yup, I do that one allllll the time. Although, really, I do all of these all the time.
ReplyDeleteThanks! It's a skill I've picked up from spending too much time online.
Oooh, cool, which nine fandoms?
Harry Potter, Disney, The MCU, Fairytales, The Lunar Chronicles, Newsies, LOTR, The Princess Bride, and Classic literature. My biggest fandom is definitely Star Wars! And, for books it is The Chronicles of Narnia.
DeleteCool.
ReplyDeleteOoh, Star Wars. It's not my biggest fandom, but I do really like it.
*gasps* How could I forget Narnia??? Those books are the best.
I am...definitely a fangirl. XD
ReplyDeleteMe tooooo. Without a doubt.
ReplyDeleteOkay now I know I am officially a fangirl.
