Firefly Review

Hi, So I never did do a proper review on Firefly, did I? I guess today's the day for it.
Five hundred years in the future , a renegade crew aboard a small spacecraft tries to survive as they travel the unknown parts of the galaxy and evade warring factions as well as authority agents out to get them.
-Summary from IMDB
Firefly was created by Joss Whedon and stars Nathan Fillion, Gina Torres, Alan Tudyk, Morena Baccarin, Adam Baldwin, Jewel Staite, Sean Maher, Summer Glau, and Ron Glass.
My Thoughts
Firefly is one of those shows that makes a big impression in a small amount of time.
I'm still wondering how it only got one season, while numerous reality shows and sitcoms get 10+ seasons.......
Anyway, Firefly is a smart show. It assumes that the viewers are intelligent enough to understand it. The characters really make the show great, but the plotlines and action sequences are great, too.
Every episode is great, but there are a few that really stand out.
It's neat to see the technology advancements in some factions, and to see how old-fashioned others are.
Firefly is basically a sci-fi western, which is part of what makes it so great.
The plots range from the team sneaking into a medical facility to a shoot-out between Inara's companion-trained friend who runs a prostitute business, to Simon and River getting kidnapped, to Mal and Kaylee attending a fancy party, to Jayne getting a town named after him.....you get the picture.
Firefly has quickly become one of my favorite shows.
Favorite Episodes: The Train Job, Bushwhacked, Our Mrs. Reynolds, Jaynestown, Shindig, Ariel, War Stories, Heart of Gold, Objects in Space, Serenity [Does that count as an episode?]
The Characters
Captain Malcolm 'Mal' Reynolds
Mal is the tough, rebellious captain of Serenity. He's a former soldier in the war, and was on the side that lost. Mal can be pretty gruff at times, but he does genuinely care a lot about his crew, and wouldn't voluntarily leave any of them. Several people have said that he has a lot of similarities to Han Solo, which is true. Mal is a very complex character, and that is why I like him. He's a great character.
Zoe Washburne
Zoe is Mal's first mate. She served with him in the war. If anything were to happen to Mal, you can bet Zoe would run the ship. She's very tough, and has a serious personality. She does crack some sarcastic jokes, once in awhile, though. Zoe is a very interesting character, and, can I just say, she kicks some major butt.

Hoban 'Wash' Washburne is Zoe's husband [though, when they first met, she didn't like him]. He's Serenity's pilot. Wash is lighthearted and funny. He has a collection of toy dinosaurs that he plays with when he's bored. Wash is definitely one of my favorites. He's a realist and sometimes argues with Mal, but they're all glad to have him around.

Jayne Cobb is the definition of rough and tough. He's a hired gun, who loves weapons [his favorite is a super gun called Vera]. He'll do anything for money [at least at first], and yet, is one of the funniest characters. Jayne is cool, and well-developed.

Kaylee Frye is Serenity's mechanic. She's a total sweetheart, and is cheerful and upbeat. She has a kind word for everyone, and really loves Serenity. Saying something bad about it is one of the few ways to get on her bad side.
She has the least combat experience of the team, and doesn't really feel comfortable shooting people.
Kaylee also loves the color pink, since she almost always wears a pink shirt, and her ''Shindig'' dress was pink.
Inara Serra is a companion traveling on Serenity. A companion is basically a prostitute, but a much more respected, glamorous one. She's highly intelligent, very graceful, and knows at least a little about combat since she taught Mal how to sword fight and can use a bow pretty well. Inara knows the most about what is socially acceptable among the crew. She's the most proper, as well, but isn't above helping out on a job.

Simon Tam is a doctor, and a very gifted one at that. He has trouble talking to people, and is very, very proper [more so than Inara]. Lots of the crew doesn't trust him [except for Kaylee], and is very protective of his little sister, River. He's probably my least favorite of the main characters, but I still really like him.

River Tam is a genius. She was taken to a special school when she was fourteen, where they performed experiments on her brain. River has telepathic-like abilities, and was trained to be a human weapon, so she's great at fighting. Often, River seems to be babbling nonsense, but she is highly gifted. River dislikes shoes, and loves to dance.

Shepherd Book
A shepherd is a preacher, in the Firefly world.
He's a very smart man, and takes care of River when Simon's not there.
He's very kind, too, and quite tough. He's a good shot, and has a semi-mysterious backstory.
Though he isn't as big of a character as Mal or Zoe, I really like him, and think he's well developed.
That's all for today.
Have you seen Firefly? What are your thoughts on it?

Comments

  1. Sounds interesting.
I kind of don't know if I'd actually like the show, because normally it takes me a season to get into the show. I would be pretty upset if I got into a show and then it abruptly ended. Anyway, thanks for the review!

  2. It is.
Yeah, it's kind of disappointing, especially since it was supposed to be a seven-year run.
At least there's Serenity, though I still think it should've lasted longer.
