Movie Review: Edward Scissorhands

Greetings and salutations, fellow bloggers (yes, I know wrong Winona Ryder movie. Do I care? Not really). Man, it feels good to be writing reviews again. I've been doing so many recaps, and Christmas posts. I mean, I did mini reviews for all the books I read in December, but it wasn't a full review. MC requested that I review this, so I did. Now, you should know that I had started a review of this beforehand, so, usually, if you request something, it won't be up the next day.
Needless to say, I'm kind of excited and I'm not really making sense.
So, let's get on with today's review before I start making even less sense.
Edward Scissorhands was directed by Tim Burton, and stars Johnny Depp, Winona Ryder, Anthony Michael Hall, Diane Wiest, Vincent Price, Kathy Baker, and Alan Arkin.
My Thoughts
In my opinion, this is one of those movies that you'll either really like or really dislike. As the resident Tim Burton fan in my family (what can I say? I appreciate the strange and unusual), I really liked it, but it's definitely a little strange, so I can't promise if you'll like it. It's definitely a personal taste thing. Of course I had specifically said to my dad earlier that I wanted to see something different, so it definitely delivered. Actually, pretty much all of the things I like about it could be something that someone dislikes about it.
What I Liked
-The cast
There were only a handful of characters that I liked or even relatively cared about (really, if I'm being honest, it was just Kim and Edward), but everybody did such a good job, and fit their roles really well. My sister kept saying, "I can't believe that's Johnny Depp. He looks so different" throughout the movie. Anthony Michael Hall does a really good job of playing a huge jerk.
-The aesthetic
This movie has a super weird aesthetic, and I really liked it. Like, all the scenery [especially the mansion where Edward lives] is so cool. Actually, lots of the scenery was really good.
-The uniqueness
Tim Burton has such a different way of telling stories and, as an experienced teller of strange, weird and different stories, I really appreciate that. I know some people really don't like weird movies, but I almost always like them. I like things that are different.
-The story
The plot kept me interested the entire time, and, again, I like how different it is. Plus, it was a well-written story.
-Winona Ryder
Okay, this scene was one of my favorites in the whole movie.
Not gonna lie, the fact that she's in it pretty much solidified me wanting to watch this movie. Make of that what you will. There's just something about her that I like, and I can't put my finger on it. I mean, she's an incredible actress, and she's gorgeous, but it's not either of those things. Somebody wanna help me out here?
What I Disliked
-Oh, geez, I really loved this movie, and I liked most of it, so there wasn't much I disliked. I do agree with my sister that the ending was a teeny bit lackluster, but it didn't bother me that much.  Look, I just love this movie. I can't promise that you will, but if you like any of the things I liked about it, then it's worth watching it at least once.
So, let's talk. Have you seen this movie? What were your thoughts on it?

Comments

  1. I actually just watched this movie myself. I really enjoyed it, and I'm a pretty big Tim Burton fan.

    1. Ooh, that's cool. So am I. I need to see more of his movies, since I loved the ones I've seen.

  2. Wow, that was fast service after a request, haha! My older sister LOVES this movie (but then again, she really likes all Tim Burton films) while my younger sister and I don't feel quite the same way. You're definitely right about it being a movie that people either love or hate. I actually think that when I rewatch it I'll like it a lot better because I'll already know what's happening. The character of Edward Scissorhands was one of my favorites from the beginning because he is just so sweet. I know what you mean about Wynona Ryder, maybe it's her energy and spunk that makes her so likeable? Good review!

    1. Haha, I had notes for this review already, so it probably won't normally be that quick. Yeah, taste is subjective, especially with things that are a little weird. Oh, that makes sense.
Yes, he's so sweet. I love that about him.
Yeah, maybe that's why I like her. You did a better job of explaining it then I did.
      Aw, thank you.

  3. You watched Edward Scissorhands! This was one of the earliest movies I remember watching and being mesmerized by it. It's so weird and heartfelt that it always kind of stuck with me. Apparently I had a love for the 'Final Girl aesthetic' and 'monster bois' from a young age and it's weird watching it realizing that this might have been where that started.
Anyways, loved this post! I'm glad you liked it.
Winona Ryder really does have that energy to her that you love but can't quite put it into words what it is. Same with Johnny Depp though, he's amazing too.

  4. Yes! I really liked it.
Yeah, that makes sense. There are several tropes I love, and then I'll reread or rewatch one of my favorites from when I was very young, and those tropes show up there.
    Aw, thank you!
Exactly! I'm glad it made sense to you and MC, because I was worried that I wasn't explaining it very well. Yes, they're both amazing.

  5. Great review! Winona does have this presence to her, it's hard to define.

  6. Thanks! She definitely does. I love that about her.
